The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Hungary began on October 30, 1983 with the laying of the corner stone of the very first Hungarian SOS Children's Village in Battonya. The construction was finished in 1986 and in the summer of the same year, the first SOS mothers together with their children could move into their new homes. The official inauguration was celebrated on September 28, 1986 and two years later, on September 8, 1998, the corner stone of the second SOS Children's Village was laid in Kecskemét.
The SOS Children's Village Kecskemét was opened on September 15, 1990 and already on June 8, 1991, the construction of the third and most recent SOS project in this country was begun in Köszeg. On October 29, 1993 the official inauguration of this third and last SOS Children's Village took place. Apart from these three SOS Children's Villages there are also three SOS Youth Houses, where the youths from the SOS Children's Villages stay during their vocational or higher educational training in order to be prepared step by step to live an independent life.
